CMMS Helps Companies De-Hazard Medical Waste

Waste reclamation or wastewater reclamation is an exacting process, but for medical facilities it’s
even more grueling. Curtis Bay Energy enables North American clinics, hospitals and other medical
professionals, to safely dispose of their medical waste. The company disposes of nearly 150 tons of bio-
hazardous waste through its incinerators, a process which not only reduces hazardous matter by 95%,
but also creates power that supports Curtis Bay’s facility.

Maintaining such a complex operation and continually complying with tough emission standards
brought the idea of integrating computerized maintenance management software (CMMS) to the
fore of the facility’s management team. Compliance, safety, and efficiency were prime targets for the
system, which they hoped would enable them to better focus their work’s scope, reduce unplanned
maintenance, and better plan equipment overhauls and outages, in addition to maintenance essentials.
The 11-member maintenance team was able to input nearly 1,000 assets into the eMaint’s X3 CMMS
within two months of setting up, ample evidence of the user-friendliness of the platform. The
maintenance team also had access to a dedicated account manager (via eMaint’s “Get On Board”
program), which made ramping-up quick and closed the “service gap”. During that time, the company
was also able to complete a major renovation project, gaining momentum from X3’s project tracking
capacities and ability to consolidate work orders. As a result of the reduced downtime, increased
uptime and improved organization gained through using X3, Curtis Bay reported a total savings of
on that project alone.
Curtis Bay is one of the companies the National Center for the Middle Market describes as “model links”.
It’s the kind of company that makes other companies look good, by helping them absorb shocks (e.g.,
stricter compliance regulations and greater service demands). And, in order to absorb its’ own shocks,
Curtis Bay relies on the stability that X3 CMMS provides to its facilities and their maintenance.
